AAMMA 23: Live Play-by-play


Team BluegrassMMA is on scene here at the Drawbridge Inn Conference Center for Absolute Action MMA presents AAMMA 23: A Night of Champions. The venue is filling up quick as we are scheduled to have 13 fights including two professional fights and thirteen amateurs with 4 title fights. Co-Headlining the card tonight is James Morton vs James “Doug” Ballinger two former AAMMA Champions and in the evenings Main Event we have Eric Moell vs Chris Sallie both of these fighters making there Pro Debuts.

Set to defend their titles tonight we have Welterweight Champion James Fehring and Woman’s Flyweight Champion Evva Johnson. Then up for grabs tonight we have Bill Underwood taking on Cody Bruce for the Middleweight Title and KJ Hanna taking on Chris Dunn for the interim Featherweight Title.

Fight 1
Jeremy Miller (0-0) vs Russel “Sean” Baehr (1-0) – Light Heavyweight
Round 1
Sean comes out first to the center of the cage but Jeremy is the first to strike. Sean counters quickly with more precise technical skills than the wild punches. Sean is throwing a massive amount of punches that are going unanswered and Sean clinches up and lands a huge knee to the face of Jeremy. Sean has Jeremy in a standing guillotine choke takes him down to the ground rolls to get top position with the choke intact and almost instantly Jeremy taps out.

Winner: Sean Baehr via Submission (Guillotine Choke) 01:07 into Round 1. Sean improves his amateur record to 2-0.
During the post-fight interview with Turtle, Sean announces this will be his last fight inside the cage so he can focus more on his family. What a way to go out, we wish you the best of luck Sean.

Fight 2
James Zervous (0-0) vs Andrew Brown (1-0) – Lightweight
Round 1
James the first to strike with a sloppy takedown attempt that Andrew is able to stuff. The fighters break off and Andrew has James up against the cage with some dirty boxing. Andrew with some jumping knees, punches, and knees that drops James to the ground. Andrew slow to react finally jumps on top of James landing some knees to the ribs that James does a decent job at blocking but gives up his back in the process where Andrew is able to lock in a rear-naked choke. Andrew is pulling real tight on the choke and James doesn’t appear to be moving, the ref checks on him and calls the fight as James looks like he passed out.

Winner: Andrew Brown via Submission (Rear-naked choke) 02:00 into Round 1. Andrew improves his amateur record to 2-0.

Fight 3
Shane Taylor (0-0) vs Clint Townsend (0-0) – Lightweight
Round 1
Shane takes center but Clint first to stroke with a leg kick. Clint with another leg quick but Shane comes in strong with a small flurry of punches that has Clint backing up a little bit. Fighters back off a little, Clint strikes again with another leg kick but Shane counters with another flurry of punches that has Clint backing up again and Shane rushes Clint and the fighters clash up against the cage. Shane takes Clint down Shane on top in full-guard. Not too much action on the ground as Shane picks up Clint and slams him down but stands up and lets Clint get back to his feet as well. Shane lands a combo that as Clint covering up, Shane comes up with a knee that connects. Fighters back to the center, Shane picking his punches, cocking up for the big punch. Clint at the last second is able to secure a takedown and almost lock in an armbar submission but the bell sounds as he does.
Round 1: Shane Taylor 10-9

Round 2
Fighters come out circling, Shane connects first with a straight but Clint counters with a combination that rocks Shane a little and backs him up where Clint rushes in with a flying knee. Clint rushes Shane up against the cage and pulls Shane down to the ground rolls and gets top position in full-mount. Clint on top landing some heavy punches to the head of Shane but Shane is tough and hanging in. Clint sees an open and goes for an armbar submission. Shane rolls with the armbar and is able to get out and he is now on top in full-guard position. Clint again sees an opening from the bottom and is able to lock in another armbar. Clint rolls with the armbar, as he does it appears to have sunk it in real deal, and Shane taps.

Winner: Clint Townsend via Submission (Armbar) 02:13 into Round 2. Clint Townsend wins his amateur debut fight and improves his record to 1-0.

Fight 4
Jake Meader (0-0) vs Dakota Warmoth (0-0) – Welterweight
Round 1
Jake moving slowly in backing Dakota up, Jake throws a straight that lands but Dakota having none of that rushes in and locks up the clinch with Jake. Jake on the outside of the clinch is throwing some knees landing to the midsection. Jake looks for a leg trip but is unsuccessful. The fighters are rolling along the cage. Jake lands some heavy knees with one appearing to connect to the groin area. Ref steps in and lets Dakota catch his wind from the illegal shot. Fight resumes. Jake with a low leg kick, Dakota counters with a combo. Dakota presses Jake clinches up with him and Jake lands a knee as he does so. The fighters are up against the cage again in the clinch position with Jake on the outside landing some more unanswered knees. Dakota picks up Jake and slams him down to the ground landing on top in full-guard but neither fight is able to do anything as the bell sounds ending the round.
Round 1: Jake 10-9

Round 2
Jake first to strike landing a nice combo but Dakota counters with a combination of his own that backs up Jake against the cage. The fighters break off and Dakota rushes in with another combo and Jake is covering up and Dakota is able to land a nice right hook that connects clean. Fighters back to the circle Jake moves in slowly that back up Dakota against the cage, where Dakota goes for a shot but is stuffed and now Jake has a standing guillotine choke that is landing some knees tot the head. Dakota is able to get free, loses mouth guard small break so he can get it back in. Fighters to the center, Jake with some right hooks that connect has Dakota stumbling holding on to the cage to stand up, Jake rushes Dakota gets the takedown up against the cage lands in half-guard position but is able to transition to full-mount. Jake has Dakota in full-mount up against the cage landing some heavy shots but not many as the bell sounds ending the round.
Round 2: Jake 10-9

Round 3
Dakota out first with a half-hearted superman punch that results in the fighters in clinch position up against the cage. Dakota on the outside trying to work for a takedown but is unsuccessful and the clinch breaks off with Jake landing a knee on the break off. Jake with center control of the cage, is picking his shots as Dakota looks dazed and continues to look at his corner for advice leaving him open. Dakota able to land a small combo but Jake regains control of the situation and has outside control of another clinch. Jake throwing some punches to the ribs of Dakota from the clinch, mixing it up with some punches to the thigh as well. Dakota is doing a good job at preventing Jake from taking him down to the ground. Dakota landing a knee of his own but the bell sounds ending the round.
Round 3: Jake 10-9

Winner: Jake Meader via Unanimous Decision (Judge 1 30-27, Judge 2 30-27, Judge 3 30-27). Jake wins his debut amateur fight bringing his record to 1-0.

Fight 5
Micah Cox (3-2) vs Robert Ingram (2-1) – Lightweight
Round 1
Robert comes out with a low leg kick fake follows it up with ahead kick but Micah is able to catch it and take the Robert down to the ground landing in top position in full-guard position. Robert appears to have a guillotine choke in pretty tight from the bottom position. Robert lets go as to not gas out this early, Robert trying to cage walk up to get back to this feet but Micah pulls him back to the ground. Robert able to get back to his feet now with a standing guillotine choke, pulling real tight but Micah picks up him and slams him backwards. Robert lands perfect, on top in full-mount position, dragging Micah up against the cage. Robert is working for something, lands a couple of shoulder checks and punches. Robert attempted a quick submission but wasn’t successful and gets back to his feet and as he does so the bell sounds ending the round.
Round 1: Robert 10-9

Round 2
Robert out first with an inside leg kick that appears to have connected to the groin of Micah. Ref steps in gives Micah a break to recover from the illegal kick. The fight resumes. Robert out first with a flurry of punches connects with a knee to the face of Micah that drops him instantly, Robert being relentless pounces on him and unleashes a combination that causes the ref to step in and call the fight.

Winner: Robert Ingram via TKO (unanswered strikes) 00:19 into Round 2. Robert improves his amateur record to 3-1

Fight 6
Matt Egner (6-6) vs Nick Noe (6-5) – Lightweight
Round 1
Nick out first with the combo, Matt counters but Nick pressures him up against the cage and fighters are now clinched up with Nick on the outside. Matt Attempts a takedown but at first stuffed but the second time around is able to secure it. Matt lands in side-control lands a punch, Nick tries to buck out causing Matt to regain composure. Matt tries to pass to get full-mount but Nick stops the attempt. Matt tries again and this time gets the full-mount position raining down some heavy punches. Nick tries to slide out the back to get out but can’t. Matt again landing some heavy shots to the head, Nick appears to be cut but not sure where at the moment. Matt still on top throwing some more heavy punches, Nick trying his best to stop gives up his arm and Matt seizes the opportunity and locks in an armbar. Nick tries to get out but can’t an soon taps to the submission.

Winner: Matt Egner via Submission (Armbar) 02:40 into Round 1. Matt improves his amateur record to 7-6

Fight 7
Ryan Barrett (0-1) vs George Conley (1-1) – Lightweight
Round 1
George takes control of the center, Ryan first with a low leg kick, George counters with a kick of his own and Ryan comes out with a combo that stuns George. George rushes in on Ryan but Ryan is able to get a takedown. George bucks and is able to roll Ryan and get top position but not for long as Ryan is able to get to his knees and tries to get up but George is able to sink in a guillotine choke gets it in tight and Ryan taps out. George has a rather large mouse underneath his eye from the first combo that Ryan was able to land.

Winner: George Conley via Submission (Darce Choke) 01:23 into Round 1. George improves his amateur record to 2-1.

Fight 8
Michael”David” West (5-2) vs James Fehring (4-0) – Welterweight Title Fight
Round 1
David out first with a leg kick, James comes with one of his own. David connects with a nice combo. James with a solid leg kick, David rushes in for a takedown but James is able to stuff it and hip tosses him to the ground. James on top in full-guard position drops a couple of heavy lands. The punches are landing clean to the face of David. Again James lands some heavy handed punches. James is just letting his lands do the talking landing almost everyone that he throws. David trying to block the punches just isn’t able to. The fighters just working for position in the last minute as the bell sounds.
Round 1: James Fehring 10-9

Round 2
James come out with a fake kick that confuses David leaving him open where James is able to land a nice clean shot that drops David. James jumps on David and goes wild with punches and it appears he isn’t doing a good job at defending and the ref steps in and calls the fight.

Winner: James Fehring via TKO (Ref stoppage due to strikes) 00:29 into Round 2. James remains the AAMMA Amateur Welterweight Champion and improves his record to a flawless 5-0.

Fight 9
KJ Hanna (11-7) vs Chris Dunn (7-5) – Featherweight Title Fight
Round 1
KJ takes center, Chris circling the outside with Chris first to strike. KJ with a leg kick and Chris counters with his own but slips in the process but able to get back to his feet. Chris back to circling throwing some leg kicks in the process. KJ throws an overhand right and misses goes in for a leg kick but Chris comes right in countering with a straight that lands. Again the same, KJ leg kick and Chris counters with a combo. Chris connects with a solid leg kick of his own and follows it up with a nice combo. Chris attempts a flying roundhouse kick but misses. Chris back to the leg kick trying o keep KJ at a distance. KJ rushes in and the fighters clinch up, Chris circles KJ and gets outside control. KJ had a loose guillotine choke in, drops to the ground with the choke intact but Chris breaks free lands some heavy punches gets to his feet and lands a nice kick to the ribs but ref steps in as the bell sounds ending the round.
Round 1: Chris 10-9

Round 2
KJ again takes center, Chris throws and lands a nice combo and the fighters clinch up again. Chris has outside control but breaks off the clinch. KJ rushes in but Chris backs out away from KJ. Chris with a nice leg kick, KJ tries a front kick but misses. Chris is able to secure a takedown lands on top in half-guard position up against the cage. KJ is holding Chris but not for long as Chris breaks free landing some huge shots, KJ is covering up not defending intelligently and the ref steps in to call the fight.

Winner: Chris Dunn via TKO (ref stoppage due to strikes) 01:39 into Round 2. Chris Dunn is the new interim AAMMA Amateur Featherweight Champion and improves his amateur record to 8-5.

Fight 10
Cody Bruce (8-4) vs Bill Underwood (3-2) – Middleweight Title Fight
Round 1
Bill goes for a body kick that connects but Cody gets the takedown with the counter and lands on top in full-mount position. Bill does have a guillotine choke in but Cody is able to get out. The fighters scrambling on the ground with Bill bucking trying to get to his feet and eventually gives up his back to Cody. Bill bucks again and Cody loses his balance and the fighters roll this time with Bill ending up on top in the full-guard position. Bill just resting on top, the ref steps in and stands the fighters up where Cody immediately goes for the double leg takedown and gets it landing on top in half-guard. Bill tries to buck again but is unable. Bill rolls to his knees giving up his back and Cody drops a couple of punches and looks like he is trying to work for the rear-naked choke but the bell sounds ending the round.
Round 1: Cody 10-9

Round 2
Cody comes out takes center, lands a nice right hook and goes for the double leg takedown again and gets it landing on top in half-guard position. Bill is doing a good job at holding Cody so he can’t inflict any damage while on top. Cody drops a few punches. Bill bucks trying to get out from the bottom. Cody maneuvers Bills hand to get better control which results in Cody getting full-mount and locking in a rear-naked choke. After a few moments of trying to fight it Bill is unable to hang in any longer and taps out.

Winner: Cody Bruce via Submission (Rear-naked choke) 01:27 into Round 2. Cody Bruce is the new AAMMA Amateur Middleweight Champion and improves his record to 9-4.

Fight 11
Heather Bassett (2-1) vs Evva Johnson (5-1) – Flyweight Title Fight
Round 1
Evva takes center Heather lands a combo that forces Evva to close in on Heather and clinch up with her against the cage. Evva has outside control of the clinch. Heather looks like she is trying to set her up for a leg sweep. Now Heather has outside control, lands a knee to the midsection. They break from the clinch and Heather lands a nice combo on the exit. The fighters clinch back up and Evva lands a knee to the midsection, fighters scrambling in the clinch. Evva is able to secure a hip-toss takedown and lands on top in full-guard. Evva drags Heather back to her corner and up against the cage. Evva is landing some shots to the ribs of Heather, Heather now cage walks back up to her feet. Heather with some shots to the ribs of Evva and Evva counters with some knees to the inside leg.
Round 1: Evva 10=9

Round 2
Evva comes out with a leg kick and Heather counters with a combo. Evva lands a combo of her own and gets the back of Heather as she was backing up from the combo that landed. Evva with the back of Heather pulls her down to the ground lands on top in side-control but not for long as Heather works to get Evva back into full-guard. Evva still on top is looking to pass from the full-guard position but Heather is doing a great job at keep her there. Evva lands a few punches to the face of Heather from the guard. Ref stands them back up where Evva lands a low inside leg kick and Heather lands a combo. The fighters clinch up against the cage as the bell sounds ending the round.
Round 2: Evva 10-9

Round 3
Each fither comes out with low leg kicks the fighters clinch up and Evva picks up Heather and carries her across the cage to her corner and lightly slams her down to the ground. Evva is able to secure side-control position attempts to get full-mount but ends up in half-guard. Heather able to roll Evva gets top position stands up for a brief second rains down some punches but Evva is able to secure a triangle choke. Heather is rolling trying to get out of the choke doing her best but can no longer hang on and taps out from the choke.

Winner: Evva Johnson via Submission (Triangle choke) 01:45 into Round 3. Evva Johnson remains the AAMMA Amateur Women’s Flyweight Champion and improves her record to 6-1.

Fight 12
Doug “James” Ballinger (0-3 Pro) vs James Morton (0-0 Pro, 7-1 Amateur) – Pro Featherweight Fight
Round 1
James comes out takes center, Doug comes out with a front kick followed by a round house both missing. James connects a nice combo shots in for a takedown but Doug is able to stop it and gets a weak guillotine choke and lets go and drops to his back with holding a choke. James able to get out and get top control in full-guard position landing a few punches setting up Doug for a pass. James able to pass to half-guard works and transitions to side-control where Doug maneuvers a little which makes James let go and now Doug is able to get him back in side-control again. James working the hand of Doug to possibly get him into a crucifix position but Doug is doing a good job at defending the attempt. James passes to full-mount position and has the leg hooks in flattening out Doug. Doug bucks and the fighters starting rolling to gain position and Doug is able to get James back into full-guard. James gets to his feet and jumps to side-control landing a few punches in the process and the bell sound ending the round.
Round 1: James 10-9

Round 2
James takes center, Doug with the front kick that misses. James with a body kick connects a little no damage but James rushes in and the fighters are clinched up against the cage. James quickly flips to get outside control. James trying to take Doug down but Doug grabs the guillotine choke and jumps to the ground to take James down but James lands on top and Doug tries to get out giving up his back to James. Doug is able to transition back to his back on the ground and James now has side-control position. Doug rolls looks like he might have an armbar submission attempt on James but James is able to get out and has the back of Doug again landing some punches to the head. Doug able to get to his back gets James in another armbar submission but James works to get out and the fighters end up in north-south position. Doug is working to get to his feet gives up his back only for a second rolls and now James is still on top but now in side-control position. James puts his knee on the midsection trying to pass is able to secure a side choke on Doug looks deep but the bell sounds ending the round.
Round 2: James 10-9

Round 3
James again takes center, Doug fakes a kick and James rushes in with a straight that connects and Doug holds on to James and drops to his knees. James uses that and gets top position in full-guard. Doug lands some shots from the bottom to the face of James while James is going to the ribs of Doug. James passes to side-control looking to trap the arm of Doug. Doug flips James and he is finally on top in side-control but not for long as James gets Doug into his full-guard. James with an elbow to the head of Doug uses the momentum and rolls Doug to get full mount but not for long as Doug rolls James. Doug stands up for a brief second lands a couple of shots but James grabs the leg of Doug to bring him back down. Doug lands a solid hammer-fist to the ribs of James. James is able to get back to his feet and allows Doug to get back to his. James with a body kick, Doug rushes in and lands a combo and the fighters clinch up against the cage but not for long as the bell sounds ending the round.
Round 3: James 10-9

Winner: James Morton via Unanimous Decision (Judge 1 29-28, Judge 2 29-28, Judge 3 29-28). James Morton wins his debut professional fight and improves his record to 1-0.

Fight 13
Chris Sallie (0-0 Pro, 7-9 Amateur) vs Eric Moell (0-0 Pro, 7-1 Amateur) vs Chris Sallie (0-0 Pro, 7-9 Amateur) – Pro Bantamweight Fight
Round 1
Chris takes center with a nice front kick that connects and Eric clinches up a little from it. Eric shoots in and score the takedown lands in side-control. Eric with a couple of knees to the ribs of Chris loosening him up and Eric is able to put the knee on the midsection to transition to full-mount but sees an opening for an armbar locks it in, rolls and Chris immediately taps out.

Winner: Eric Moell via Submission (Armbar) 01:13 into Round 1. Eric wins his debut professional fight and improves his record to 1-0.
