It was reported yesterday that Jon Lineker was out of his bout with Cody Garbrandt at this weekend’s UFC Pittsburgh event. The hope was that a replacement could be found on short notice due to the fact that Garbrandt while still young in his UFC career is a megastar in the area. Today the fears have been put to rest as it is Combate reported that Augusto Mendes will step up to the challenge.
Garbrandt (7-0) has won his first two fights under the UFC banner. The Team Alpha Male bantamweight started his career with six straight knockouts. “No Love” is a crowd favorite in the area. The 24 year old is a Pinnacle FC veteran and has graced the cage of both NAAFS and Gladiators of the Cage on the local scene. He made his UFC debut just over a year ago with a finish of Marcus Brimmage at UFC 182.
Mendes is undefeated with five wins. His last three fights have been with Legacy Fighting Championships. The 32 year old Brazilian also lays claim to multiple jiu jitsu world titles. He holds four submission wins out of his five victories.
UFC Fight Night Pittsburgh goes down this Sunday night from the Consol Energy Center. The event will air live on UFC Fight Pass and is headlined by a welterweight fight between Donald Cerrone and Alex Oliveira.
