Dominic Mazzotta (12-1) hinted that he had big fight news on the horizon, and that news came to fruition on Monday, as it was announced that he has signed with Bellator MMA, and will make his promotional debut later this month.
The Pittsburgh area native “Honey Badger” is set to take on A.J. McKee at Bellator 178 on April 21 in Uncasville, Connecticut. The bout will air live as part of the evening’s main card on Spike TV. MMAFighting first reported the matchup.
Mazzotta is currently riding a nine-fight winning streak, and he holds both the Pinnacle FC bantamweight and featherweight titles. Ten of his wins have come via stoppage, with his only loss coming in 2014 to current UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt.
“I feel like I’m the most underrated and overlooked fighter in the country,” Mazzotta said prior to his last bout in December. “I now understand every fight I have to make a statement. I’m not only physically but mentally ready to do just that!”
Mazzotta topped Solon Staley in that bout, and earned a contract with Bellator MMA.
He has a tough opponent on his hands, as the 21-year-old McKee is seen as one of the top prospects under the Bellator MMA banner. He made his pro debut for the promotion in 2015 and has remained undefeated since. In his last outing, the son of UFC veteran Antonio McKee topped Brandon Phillips via decision at Bellator 171 in January.
Bellator 178 will be headlined by Ohio native Daniel Straus defending his featherweight title in his fourth matchup against Patricio “Pitbull” Freire. The fight card also features unbeaten female flyweights Ilima-Lei MacFarlane and Jessica Middleton squaring off.
